What is Injection Molding?

If you stop what you’re doing right now and look around, you’ll notice a large portion of products are made from plastic. Have you ever wondered how these products are made? Some plastic products are created through a process called injection molding.

The process of injection molding is not easy by any means though. It is the process of forcing molten plastic into a mold. However, plastic isn’t the only material that can be used for this process. Injection molding can be for metals, ceramics, glass, and many other materials. Here at Jaycon Systems, we work with plastics specifically.  

Injection molding starts by heating up the plastic so it transitions from a solid to liquid state. The liquid plastic is then injected into a mold cavity. The cavities have been machined so that the plastic’s design is in the mold. Once the cavity is filled with the liquefied plastic, it cools down and starts to solidify. After the plastic is mostly solidified, the part is then ejected from the mold. This cycle is repeated over and over until the desired amount of pieces have been produced.

There are numerous parameters that have to be considered and evaluated during the entire process. The type of plastic being used has a direct influence on these parameters. Our most commonly used plastics at Jaycon are acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), polypropylene (PP), polycarbonate (PC), PC & ABS, thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA).
